Conventional vs Functional

Some things I hear about from clients are: headaches, bloating, gas, dry skin, eczema, brain fog, forgetfulness, edema, inability to lose weight, insomnia, and hormonal imbalances.

There are many doctors who specialize in each of these areas. You go to a skin doctor for eczema, and they prescribe something for that, and along with that comes a side effect. When you see that doctor again, you tell them about the side effect, and then they prescribe something for that. With that comes another side effect, and when you go back again, you're prescribed another medication for that side effect, and so on. I believe you can get the picture, and before long, you're on ten different medications to help with all of the side effects. This is conventional medicine, and each doctor specializes in a specific problem or symptom, addressing one thing at a time.

Functional medicine looks at the person as a whole. The heart, gut, skin, mind, and hormones. And then they play detective to determine the root of the dysfunction. Often, it is the gut that affects the brain, and the liver that affects the bloating and inability to lose weight. You may have SIBO. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. It may be at the root of bloating and gas. Food additives can also cause eczema, dry skin, and itching. Gluten and dairy can contribute to eczema flares. So multiple symptoms can actually stem from one specific dysfunction in the body. Functional medicine seeks out the root cause and restores balance to the body. Therefore, you're taking fewer medications.

If you are interested in finding the root of your symptoms/dysfunction, leave me a message on the last page of my website with your contact information. One of the first things I recommend is an elimination diet. You can discover a lot of things just from that.
